Captain Renault: I’m shocked, SHOCKED

With a week to go before his tax evasion sentencing and the anniversary of his high profile crack bust, The Post reports that Marion Barry tested positive for cocaine use last fall.

Last week’s CityPaper reported in the Loose Lips column (scroll down “THE CONSPIRACY LIVES”) that Barry supporters led by Shuta Myoli were planning a rally at E. Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse on the day of his sentencing. Myoli believes that his tax evasion charges were a reaction to his anti-ballpark stance and not his admission that he did not pay his taxes. In other words “baseball set ’em up.” I suppose MLB is also responsible for the positive test too. Nevertheless, here is to a complete recovery for Mayor Barry from his addiction to the white nose candy.

The saddest part about that article is the quote from Barry to reporters – “write what you want to write” – the sense of defeat is so unlike the bluster we’re used to from him. Unless I’m interpreting it incorrectly and it is bluster!

I’ve never understood how people can continue to support him – but then I don’t go in much for redemption.

One thing is for sure, the story of Marion Barry is one of the strangest and wildest in political history. Everytime you think there’s an end to it, there’s an even stranger coda.
