Taxi Fare Alert!!

In the swiftest of moves, the DC Taxicab Commission Approved Zone Fare Increases on Friday that took effect this morning. Yes, that’s right, with a weekend’s notice; we have new fares (see below). Reminiscent of when the Taxicab Commission added a fuel surcharge before printing the notices for cabs, this rate increase has caught most cabbies unawares.

Don’t let it catch you unawares, for most rates have actually dropped – the base fare rose by about $1, but the $1.50 fuel surcharge is gone, for a small net savings. If you’re smart, print out the Taxicab Commisssion Press Release or tear out the Washington Post article so you can challenege psycho taxi drivers and know how much to tip the last decent cabbie in DC. I already had to give my morning driver my Post copy as a heads up.

The New DC TaxiCab Rates:

Zones Old Fare New Fare Percent Increase
1 $ 5.50 6.50 (18%)
2 $ 7.60 8.80 (15%)
3 $ 9.50 11.00 (15%)
4 $11.50 12.60 (10%)
5 $12.80 14.00 (10%)
6 $14.10 15.50 (10%)
7 $16.20 17.80 (10%)
8 $17.20 18.90 (10%)

I travel from Alexandria to DCA a lot; what I don’t understand is why it costs me $12 to go TO the airport and then $22 to come home (I make them take Four-Mile run both ways).

I appreciate this info on the D.C. cab rates — I just wish I could figure out WTF is up with Alexandria’s rates. Apparently on the way back there’s an airport charge, but that still doesn’t explain the $10 discrepancy every freaking time I come home.

Interesting… The MWAA site has a fare calculator that shows $22 to be most of Alexandria. Maybe there is a airport surcharge.

What makes me shake my head is that a trip from downtown DC to DCA (5-7 miles) costs me the same as a taxi from downtown to my apartment in Mt Pleseant (2 miles or less), becuase trips into Arlington are by milage (the smart way) vs. rip-off zones

Here is a blog that is trying to do something about improving the taxicab system
