I am so in the “amateur night at the bar” camp for NYE. Of all nights in the year, this one I adamantly stay home for, even when we entered the 21st century.

Why go out, why deal with the crowds, the hype, the overpriced drinks served to bar greenhorns intent on drinking till drunk post-midnight?

Of any night in the year, this one so qualifies for the midnight rule – if you ain’t chatting someone up by the bewitching hour, cut your losses and head home. It only gets messy past midnight & solo.

I remember New Years 2000, where I spent the night in the Dept. of the Treasury Year 2000 crisis center. Growing up, New Years (or osho-gatsu in Japanese) was the BIGGEST holiday event but ever since graduation from college, it has really become very much low key – probably because I worked during many NYE’s (on a ship in the Arabian Gulf several times, etc.).
