Nixon & Elvis met on this day in 1970

It was 35 years ago today that Elvis Presley came here to meet with President Richard Nixon. Here is more about the famous photo taken of the two that day:

Of all the requests made each year to the National Archives for reproductions of photographs and documents, one item has been requested more than any other. That item, more requested than the Bill of Rights or even the Constitution of the United States, is the photograph of Elvis Presley and Richard M. Nixon shaking hands on the occasion of Presley’s visit to the White House.

A site hosted at GW has a rundown of the meeting. Nixon made Elvis a “Federal Agent-at-Large” in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. The King would later use this power to stop a plane carrying Hamburger James (scroll down about 16 paragraphs), whom many Washingtonians may recall from the annual telling of the “Hamburger James story” by Don & Mike every year at Christmastime.

Thank you very much.
