Zipping Up Sales

Seems Zip Car is trying to drum up business during the August doldrums the old-fashioned way, with a town crier. I spotted this freak-show at lunch today. A Scion followed by a Mini Cooper Zip Car complete with a megaphoned maniac yapping about quick and easy rentals.

Calling Zipcar just now, (they hide their rates on the website) its around $9/hour or $60/day for the Scion xB pictured and $12/hour or $85/day for the Mini if you take either for the weekend.

Hmm… I think I’ll stick with my bike.

They’re handy for large grocery runs and trips to Home Depot and whatnot… if you only need a car when you have to carry something too big to go on a bike, it’s a pretty good deal. MBDC’s own Erin Myers uses them for carrying her DJ gear around to distant gigs.

Flexcar, on the other hand, doesn’t offer daily rentals but has some sort of discount agreement with Enterprise, which seems like a better deal if you need the car for a day or more.

Anyone have any personal experience with ZipCar or FlexCar? I considered using one of them last time I was in Seattle but ended up cabbing it on the company dime. What I really need is a Segway that folds into a carry-on bag. ha.

Oops. Note to self: RTFA. Or, in this case, RTFC. Thanks.

If you’re an Alexandria resident or work in Alexandria or Arlington there are good deals with Flexcar – anything from a free month and free signup to 1/2 the signup fee paid for you. http://flexcar.com/washingtondc/default.asp a

Zipcar rates sound high – but really aren’t when you factor in no extra charges for gas or insurance… if you’re a dc resident and don’t drive to work it probably costs more just to keep your car insured and gas’d up, plus car payment etc.

They’re taking tactics from the LaRouchies now? They must be desperate…

ZipCar is a really great idea for people like college students who only need cars once in a great while. Or if you just occasionally have an urge to drive a BMW. For everybody else, who knows, but they do have their place. I just wish they would let the ones who want them come to them, and stop bugging me on the street.

Zipcar is great for people who live in the city and can’t afford or don’t have a need for a personal car. It’s the only way I was able to give up my car when I moved into DC from the Maryland suburbs. And their rates are right on the website at http://www.zipcar.com/dc/check-rates.
