Nuking DC

Nuking DC

Driving up 395 in the morning, right past the Pentagon, I always remember that I’m going to work inside a giant bulls-eye, just a few blocks from the White House, and just a short distance from the Capitol. Of course, now there’s a Google Maps Hack that will show you just how much damage various nuclear weapons would do to the metropolis. 100 Kilotons of nuclear detonation would pretty much level the city. One megaton would pretty much destroy the whole area.

Creepy.

Nice rings, but this map doesn’t say much you couldn’t figure out by using a plain road map and a protractor since “no account is taken of terrain, urban density, ground type, weather conditions, and so on.”

That’s the most fun of an A-bomb map – making it adjust for a mid-air detonation with all the buildings & terrain effecting the blast radius.

No matter what, I’m thinking that folks like me, with a nice, clear view of the White House one block away (or Capitol Building), will not need to worry about the day after – they’ll be gone the moment of.

For added fun, put in 50000kt for the yield. This is the size of the world’s largest nuclear weapon – the Tsar Bomba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_bomba).
