Shortstopped

Your Washington Nationals are committed to stay ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the race for the division title. After last night’s loss, they hold a slim 1/2 game lead over the Tomahawk’s who are set to see teh return of Chipper Jones to the lineup in short order.

Nick Johnson is at least a couple of weeks away from making a full return to the club. The greatest concern however seems to be at shortstop, where Christian Guzman has been hitting .190, well below the Mendoza Line. Guzman signed a four-year $16 million contract to play in DC this past off-season.

Jim Bowden has been busy trying to convince former Reds shortstop to come out of retirement and finish the season for the Nationals. Christian Guzman’s struggles at the plate have prompted the front office to find a short-term solution until Guzman can find his swing again. Frank Robinson wants to keep him in the lineup rather than sit him, hoping that he will have enough at bats to resolve his troubles.

Bowden is also trying to convince the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to part with reliever Danys Baez. Coming back to Guzman, the deal may include Middle Infielder Julio Lugo who has been known to have hot hitting streaks.

Perhaps all the buzz is a way of indirectly telling Guzman that his spot may be in jeopardy. Management has been known to do that on occasion.
