Z104 to carry Nationals Games

And the winner is… Z104?!. Looks like that the pop-station owned by WTOP will be broadcasting 120 or so game, with the other Bonneville AM property 1050 AM will be broadcasting the other 40 games. Apparently deals with Clear Channel and Infinity both fell through.

Independence Air In Trouble, Plane Repossessed

I flew Independence Air this week to Chicago, and I had no idea they were in such bad financial shape. Hell, they had a plane repossessed on Sunday. My questions are, though, did they leave the safety message in the plane with Carville and Matalin? How did they distract the gate agents while they hooked up the tow-truck? Where does one store a repossessed plane? Wacky.

Rejected vanity plates

WTOP has this article up on their website that lists some rejected vanity licence plates from DC, MD and VA. Among them: “GWBUSH,” “KNLNGUS,” “PUTA,” and “GAYBOY.”

A Great Weekend in DC

Every once in a while I have one of those great weekends that make me love living in Washington DC. A great couple of nights with my best friends, out on the town and really living it up.

Thursday night was a great warm up at the Big Hunt in Dupont Circle. The fellas and I took advantage of the Red Hook specials and rocked the place out with internet jukebox picks all night. (PS- We are still wondering why the CityPaper failed to interview us for their Jukebox Heroes article.)

Friday night we met for a little low-key drinking at Toledo Lounge in Adam’s Morgan and ended up showing a gang of new-to-DC types how to party in true DC-style. The night led up the street to Asylum where we re-enacted that drinking scene from “Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels.” Of course a famous 18th Street Big Slice of Pizza had to round out the night.

Saturday we put on our dancing shoes and headed out to The Edge in South East for their ever-growing Goth/Industrial Saturday event called Chiaroscuro. I cut the rug all night with my special lady and then the gang and I all shot over to El Tamarindo for some 3AM burritos. Where of course we ran into 2 other groups of familiar faces also finishing their nights at the best after hours dining spot in the District.

In all a great weekend out in DC to remind me what a fun f*cking city I’m so lucky to live in.

MD political gossip

Last week, it came out that one of Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich’s longtime aides had spread rumors about Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley having an extramarital affair. The aide in question, Joseph Steffen, resigned after it came to light that he was spreading the rumors via emails and conservative websites (sorry, I don’t know which websites, otherwise I would have linked to them). Mayor O’Malley asked Gov. Ehrlich for an apology to his wife and kids, and Ehlich responded by saying he didn’t need to give an apology, as he himself did no wrong. Makes you think of high school, doesn’t it? “OMG, did you hear, X & Y were $%!^@ behind the bleachers!?! What a slut! But you didn’t hear it from me…”

The interesting thing is the possible fallout from this mess. Ehrlich is the current (Republican) governor of Maryland, and is up for re-election in 2006. Mayor O’Malley (Democrat) is considered to be a candidate for the governor’s chair for that election. Also considered a possible candidate for governor is Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan (also Democrat). It seems very early now, but this story seems to be the start of an interesting election season in Maryland.

First things first

The news just broke in to show a bunch of screaming, happy Terrapin fans in College Park. Is it sad that my first response was, “What street is that Maryland Book Exchange in the background on?”

pink hearts and horseback riding / volleyball / chinese lunar new year / guns

yes, that describes my upcoming valentine’s day weekend. (btw, if you’ve read my personal description, you’ll see i’m a bit eccentric.)

horseback riding: scheduling this has proven a bit tough. i just want to gallop a bit and roam in the virginia highlands and for freakin’s sake i work out by farmland — but for some reason, i can’t find a horseback riding facility that allows more than the ho-hum guided trail. i’ve heard the suggestion of greenway stables, but they seem to be long gone…

volleyball: i’ve been playing in the capitol alumni networkleague and am mildly obsessed. our games are wednesdays, but i’d love to play more. anyone got a good thing going on? i recently went to herndon community center and have quite an amusing anecdote. on tuesdays, the majority of the regular players are chinese. it’s just been that way for awhile. so i went this past tuesday for the first time, and forgetting it was chinese lunar new year, i was mildly amused that not one person on court was chinese. the 10 players were most unexpectedly and most oppositely of hispanic origin. i wonder how next tuesday will go…both groups seem very friendly and i think there will be alot of language-knowledge exchanged. volleyball styles are completely different though…

guns. well, this is how the conversation went:

friend: hey what are you up to on monday for valentine’s day…

me: well, no plans yet…probably dinner, movie, whatever…

friend: wanna go blam blam?

me: what?

friend: you know…

me: what?

friend: c’mon the shooting range!

me: ah yes, you’ve been wanting to go for awhile and vday is as good as any

so, i’ve taken the day off and we’re heading to blue ridge arsenal. do you know what to expect? coz i don’t. my dad always wanted me to learn to shoot…just because. because it develops my skills…as a hunter…for food (?). anyway, in college, i wanted to do archery over shooting, but ended up w/ ball room dancin’. so let’s see how my aim does (be very glad you’re not going w/ me).

hope you vday, no matter who you are or are not with, is just as random…

No news is good news?

Our friends in New York got Mike Piazza, holding a press conference in which he did NOT come out of the closet.

Here in the national capital region (Okay, Baltimore, but close enough), we get a politician holding a press conferenc to announce that he is NOT cheating on his wife and that someone is spreading nasty rumors about him.

Stalking Senators

So I ran in to new star of the Senate Barack Obama tonight at about 11pm. The new senator from Illinois was coming out of the Oceanaire on 12th and F. He was talking to a few people, and I ran up, star-struck and said hello. He was very gracious and asked me a few questions about myself, and I even managed to stutter out some answers. This was especially special because Sen. Obama is from me and Narni
