VA to kill Hybrid Exemption?

The Washington Post is reporting that Virginia is considering removing the exemption. Honestly, I think this is one of the reasons that I’d really buy a hybrid vehicle, to get around the HOV-3 requirement on 395 and the restrictions on 66. The exemption is scheduled to expire in 2006, but had previously thought to be easily renewed by the state.

It’s interesting, this recent spate of stories saying that hybrids are clogging the HOV lanes. I drive a hybrid, and have since 2000. While I’ve seen their numbers rise dramatically, I’m just not seeing them clog the roads. In fact, it’s regular cars with one driver that are causing the congestion, and an almost complete lack of enforcement that’s allowing it to continue. Apparently, the scofflaws are assuming that it’s okay because they see single drivers in hybrids.

Is this all just an excuse to bash hybrid drivers, by people who drive gas guzzlers and are jealous?
