Metro Trains Collide Head On

In a hideous Metro accident this afternoon, two trains collided head on in a station on the Red Line:

When the car pulled into the station and stopped, the conductor began screaming for people to get off the train, and the passengers started running, according to Harnice.

Clingerman said in a matter of seconds a second train hit their train head-on and went on top of the first train, sending debris flying.

I’m so glad we just gave Metro more money, now they can use it to crash more trains!

Post Election Stress Relief

Got the post-election blues? Or maybe you’re looking to swing from a chandelier to celebrate. Either way, if you are looking for some fist pumping, foot stomping entertainment to blast that political stress right out of you, there are two great options on tomorrow night. The best bands in totalitarian Industrial dance music are coming to the District to herald in a new age of Bushwhacking.

At Nation, in addition to the usual Thursday night Goth/Industrial dance party, visits Laibach. These guys are classic para-military psuedo-fascist electro-percussionist straight out of 80’s Slovenia. This is the first time they’ve played in the US in ten years. Their shows are known for impressive stage theatrics and soul punching beats.

If that’s not your cup of jackboots, then you’ve got KMFDM playing over at the 930 Club tomorrow night as part of their 20th Anniversary tour. These guys are one of industrial-dance music’s big guns, perfecting the ultra-heavy beat which makes for some damn fine rug cutting when the mood takes you. This tour will feature plenty of their political dance hits such as “Sex on the Flag” and “A Drug Against War”.

Either show is a fine choice for indulging in some post-election debauchery. I’m tickled pink that they are happening right in Dubya’s own backyard.

Stuck on [insert name of your preferred candidate here]

Is it just me, or are the “I voted” stickers lame? Didn’t they use to have big, circular ones? The one I got is a little dinky oval with a small flag and the words “I voted.” You probably have to stand two feet away from me to see what it says. One of the candidates should run on the platform of “better ‘I voted’ stickers.” Then we’ll see who wins.

Overheard in line at my polling place this morning….

“I think all the ones with the white headphones are voting for Kerry.”

Survey: Election Day

So I just finished voting and I’m curious to see which DC Metroblogging reader had the longest wait to vote. I vote in the Wilson Blvd preccinct in Rosslyn where I waited for an hour and 15 minutes before I voted. Can anyone beat that?

Voting in Virginia

I couldn’t have asked for better weather this morning as I left the house to vote. Crisp and autumnal, with bright sunshine over the horizon. The line stretched the length of the football field and track next to the school, around 300 feet or so. I arrived on at the corner of 29th and the parking lot at 7:05am this morning. I would estimate between two and four hundred people in the line ahead of me, had I thought ahead, I might have counted bodies, but I was busy deciding who would get my vote.

I was given the option of taking the Democratic and Republican sample ballot from some party flacks that were handing them out, but I passed. I did, however, buy a cup of coffee from the PTA of the Abingdon School who were selling coffee and pastry at the end of the lot.

An election official came by and told us we’d have about a 70 minute wait to vote from where we were standing. Would that her prediction were true! I waited with a jubilant Red Sox Fan and a young couple who were late for work, each glad to be there, but none glad to wait for what turned out to be 90 minutes.

Though tempted to drop trou as Sean Suggested, I kept clothed, held my nose, and voted. I voted in position 167 (on the A-K roster, the shorter of the lines) at 8:38am this morning. We vote in Arlington County on WINvote touch screens. My request for a paper ballot was denied. So I voted on the touchscreen, tapped in my write-in for the president, and hoped. Who knows if it will get counted?

Thankfully, traffic was light on the 395 into DC, so I was only 30 minutes late for work.

Looking for a place in Mt. Pleasant to watch the election results?

New to the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, I recently found “Tonic” at 3155 Mt. Pleasant Street. Their menu is full of good old-fashioned American comfort food with a modern twist. I never would have thought that I’d be raving about tator-tots, but Tonic has the best I’ve ever had, and Bernie’s Spicy Wings are the real thing, and I come from the land of deep-fried goodness and hot wings. The bar in the basement features a 46

Skatin’ in a Winter Wonderland

Winter isn’t that far off (though it doesn’t even quite feel like fall yet), and if you’re looking for a place to go ice skating when the time comes, I recommend the rink at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. The rink is big enough that even when a lot of people are there, it’s not too crowded. They also play music while you skate, though they tend to stick to themes – once it was all Celine Dion, which made for an…interesting experience. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors, students (with ID), and kids. Skate rental is $3 with ID. You can also rent a locker for $0.50, with a $5 deposit. There’s more information here.
