my air travel rampage continues…

setting aside my frustrations with the airlines, let’s focus on the airport itself, namely dulles international airport.

i was on my way to the us airways B terminal when the infamous mobile lounge / people mover broke — 10 feet from the terminal. i could see the doors to the terminal, i could see my gate, i could see other people in other mobile lounges getting on and off. yet, i was stuck for 25 minutes on the runway, spending the time to build the courage to face the reality that i was going to miss my flight.

and i did.
i missed my flight to st. thomas.
i was on my way to a vacation that i’ve put off for 5 months.
and did i mention a black cat crossed my path that morning?

the stylish white mobile lounges at dulles were crafted in the ’60s to save passengers the daunting trek between the main terminal and the jetways. designed by the chrysler corp., imagine yourself enjoying a short sit in the lounge while being whisked away to your terminal, protected from inclement weather, jet noise, rampant airline mechanics and runaway luggage carts.

are you kidding me? dulles chose this thing? from the picture above and if you’ve had the (dis)pleasure to ride one, you know it’s the most ridiculous, inefficient form of transportation you’ll ever run into in any airport.

due to complete in 2009, the $3 billion dulles renovation project has already begun, but i should have waited to take us airways until after thanksgiving when a 1,000 foot moving sidewalk will connect the main terminal with B. during my time stuck in the moon-mobile, i kept thinking it would have only taken me 10 minutes to walk the 1,000 feet.

on top of all this, i lost my wallet. i blame that on the stinkin’ black cat. but those mobile lounges are all dulles’ doing. can’t wait to see them undo it!

The real question is…. did you eventually make it to St. Thomas?

yes yahoo! my worries melted away once i got there, but it sucks when you have to work at taking a vacation. if you ever go, my recommendation is pack light so you can bring 6 liters of rum back :)
